The Johnson County Trojans (4-0) traveled to
Metter (1-2) for the sub-region opener. The Trojans came away with a
hard fought 14-11 victory. Johnson County has now defeated Metter in 8
out of the 10 games played between the two schools. The Trojans are
off to their best start since 2004.
The Trojans received the opening
kickoff and after moving the ball down to the Metter 29 they turned the ball
over on downs. Metter would strike quick. In only six plays the
Tigers had traveled the 71 yards for the touchdown. The big play was a
48 yard pass from Blake Williams to Deon Eason. After the Trojans went
three and out Metter once again moved the ball. This time going 54
yards in eight plays. This time, however, the score was a field goal.
Metter had a 9-0 lead with 10:51 left in the second quarter. JOCO took
over at their own 40 and was still having trouble moving the ball. The
biggest play of the game would occur on 4th and 4 from the Metter 44.
Punter Alex Allen hit D. J. Rozier for 31 yards down to the Metter 13.
Larry Taylor ran the ball in from there on the next play. The Trojans
moved the ball on their next possession as well. The Trojans started
on their own 29 with 2:45 left in the game. They got down to the one
with 7.6 seconds remaining. JOCO was able to get two plays in this
time but couldn't score. The halftime score was Metter 9 JOCO 8.
The Tigers received the second half
kickoff but couldn't move the ball. The Trojans took over on their own
29. It took 11 plays and 5:15 but the Trojans would take the lead with
3:03 remaining in the third quarter. JOCO had to overcome five
penalties on this drive. D. J. Rozier completed a 15 yard
pass to Zack Walker for the touchdown. The conversion failed and JOCO
led 14-9. Metter fumbled the ensuing kickoff but the Trojans could do
nothing with it. After an exchange of punts Metter started a drive at
the Johnson County 43 with 8:11 remaining in the game. After eight
plays Metter had first and goal from the three. The Trojans defense
"manned up" and pushed the Tigers as far back as the 25. D. J. Rozier
intercepted a Blake Williams pass in the end zone to end the threat.
The Trojans were unable to run out the clock and with 3.1 seconds on the
clock D. J. Rozier ran out of the back of the end zone to give Metter a
safety. Metter tried a hail mary at the buzzer but the Trojans defense
knocked down the pass.
The Trojans will host Montgomery County
next Friday. This will be homecoming. Montgomery County played
perhaps their best game in several years against Treutlen losing 14-6.
This Montgomery County team is much better than the past few years and is
hungry for a win.
