The Johnson County
Trojans defeated the Montgomery County Eagles, 34-20, at Herschel Walker
Field. The Trojans improved to 5-0 on the season and are one of nine
remaining undefeated teams in Class A. The Trojan fans showed up in
full force, packing the home stands for homecoming and the first Friday
night home game of the season. Courtney Boulineau was crowned the
Queen.
D. J. Rozier scored
three first half touchdowns and passed for another to lead the Trojans to a
28-0 halftime lead. The first touchdown came on the Trojans second
possession. Rozier capped off the 38 yard drive with a 23 yard run.
The conversion failed. The Trojans went 48 yards for the touchdown on
their next possession. The biggest play of the drive was a 23 yard run
by Deon Cuyler. Rozier went in from the one this time. The
conversion attempt failed again. After one quarter the Trojans led
12-0. On their first possession of the second quarter JOCO took the
ball at their own 37 and drove 63 plays in 11 plays for the touchdown.
Zack Walker had three catches on the drive for 24 yards. Once again
Rozier went in from the one. This time the conversion attempt was
successful as Daniel Wright ran left, came back right and dove into the
corner of the end zone. The Trojans final drive of the night came with
1:50 left on the clock and JOCO 68 yards from paydirt. JOCO picked up
a big third and 11 with a 15 yard pass to Tony Solen. A couple of
plays later D. J. Rozier hit Daniel Wright over the middle for a 27 yard
gain down to the three. With 5.1 seconds remaining in the half Zack
Walker made a spectacular catch in the back of the end zone. D. J.
Rozier ran in the conversion to give the Trojans a 28-0 halftime. The
halftime stats were as lopsided as the score. The Trojans had 121
yards rushing and 106 yards passing for a total of 227 yards.
Montgomery had only 51 yards rushing and 0 yards passing. It appeared
as if the mercy rule would soon be in effect but the Eagle's had different
thoughts.
After forcing
Montgomery to punt the Trojans started their only drive of the third quarter
at their 39. Ten plays later the Trojans had a fourth and four from
the 21. D. J. Rozier hit Zack Walker in the end zone for an apparent
touchdown. However, pass interference was called and the ball was
turned over on downs. Starting at their 37 Montgomery County put
together a 16 play, 73 yard drive that took 8:34 off the clock. A very
impressive drive but probably not the type of drive you want when you're
down by 28 points. Robert Powell carried the ball 11 times on the
drive, including the final yard. The Trojans blocked the kick and with
7:25 remaining the score was 28-6. After stopping the Trojans
Montgomery partially blocked a punt and was set up in good field position.
The Eagle's completed their only pass of the game, a 35 yarder down to the
four, on this drive. They scored on the next play and made the score
28-12 with 2:25 left. One play after an unsuccessful onside kick the
Trojans scored. Larry Taylor ran up the middle broke through a couple
of tackles and raced to the end zone. The 58 yard run made the score
34-12. Montgomery tacked on a touchdown against the Trojans JV with
8.9 seconds remaining. The conversion was good and the score was
34-20. Montgomery County would pick up two penalties, a personal foul
and an unsportsmanlike conduct, on the Trojans final kneel down play.
These penalties would result in the ejection of an Eagle player.
The Trojans (5-0) will
travel to Alamo for a game against the Wheeler County Bulldogs (0-5).
Kickoff is at 8:00. |
