TROJANS DEFEAT PORTAL 22-12, GO TO 3-0 ON THE SEASON

The Johnson County Trojans traveled to Portal to face the Panthers on Friday. JOCO was in for a tougher battle than they expected or wanted.  The Trojans, trailing 12-10 early in the fourth quarter, got a touchdown pass and a touchdown run from D. J. Rozier to put the game away.  Larry Taylor was the workhorse for the Trojans getting 113 yards on 18 carries.  Zack Walker had a good night receiving with 3 catches for 78 yards.

Portal got the scoring started with 2:45 left in the first quarter.  Joseph Ware ran 23 yards around the left end for the Panther touchdown.  This was the first time this season that the Trojans have been behind in a game.  The Trojans fumbled on their next possession, setting up the Panthers at the Trojan 24.  The Trojan defense held firm and stopped the Panthers on downs.  After an exchange of punts JOCO got the ball at midfield.  It looked like the Trojans were about to get on the board but a fumble at the six stopped the drive.  The Trojan defense held firm again allowing the Panthers only one yard in 3 plays.  The Portal center snapped the ball over the punters head and out of the back of the end zone to give the Trojans a safety.  After the kick JOCO started at the Portal 49.  On the fourth play of the drive D. J. Rozier hit Daniel Wright on the sideline just across the goal line to give JOCO the lead with just 34.6 seconds remaining in the half.  Daniel Wright ran in the conversion to give the Trojans a 10-6 halftime lead.

On the opening drive of the second half Portal moved the ball out to midfield but fumbled.  The Trojans then drove down to the Portal 21 before turning it over on downs.  Portal was able to drive the ball out to midfield again but this time an interception stopped the drive.  Shamarko Brown intercepted the ball at the Trojan 45 and raced into the end zone.  However, a questionable penalty at the Panther 32 kept the score off the board.  The Trojans were unable to move the ball and forced to punt.  A good Alex Allen punt had the Panthers pinned at the five.  However, they were not pinned for long.  Joseph Ware ran 95 yards to give Portal the lead, 12-10.  The Trojans got a good kickoff return from Zack Walker to set them up at the Portal 47.  It took 10 plays but JOCO took the lead back with 9:55 left on the clock.   Zack Walker caught a 21 yard touchdown pass from D. J. Rozier.  Portal fumbled the ensuing kickoff and JOCO was back in business at the Portal 38.  It took eight plays and almost five minutes for the Trojans to put the final score on the board.  D. J. Rozier ran 3 yards for the score.  The score was 22-12 JOCO with 5:15 remaining.  The Trojans defense stopped Portal and then the Trojan offense was able to run out the clock.  JOCO will travel to Metter next Friday for a game against the Tigers.
