JOCO 22 TREUTLEN 14 |
|
The Johnson County Trojans
(8-1) defeated the Treutlen Vikings (5-3) to clinch second place in the
sub-region and the right to host the region playoff game. The Trojans
will have next week off before hosting the #3 team from sub-region B.
The short story on the game was field position and turnovers. JOCO
started three drives inside their own 5 yard line. By far the worst
field position for the Vikings was on their last drive...at their own 10
yard line. Treutlen had three turnovers...JOCO got 14 points off these
turnovers. JOCO had only one turnover and Treutlen didn't capitalize
on it.
Treutlen stopped the Trojans on
their opening possession and took over at their own 41. They drove as
far as the JOCO 7 but after a four yard loss an R. J. Dennard pass was
picked off by Rex Walker and returned out to the Treutlen 37. The
Trojans would score nine plays and 4:22 later. Kevin Rozier went the
final two yards on fourth down. Treutlen would drive to the Trojans 40
where they were forced to punt. A great punt by Devonte Pierce pinned
the Trojans at the one. Unable to climb out of the hole the Trojans
were forced to punt the ball back to the Vikings. This time Treutlen
would start at the JOCO 28. Six plays later the Vikings tied the
score. Cartell McClendon scored from four yards out with 3:03 left in
the half. A good kickoff return by Rex Walker set the Trojans up at
the Treutlen 43. On the fourth play of the drive Zack Walker made a
great catch of a D. J. Rozier pass to give the Trojans the lead. The
same two players hooked up for the two point conversion. JOCO led 14-6
at halftime.
After an unsuccessful onside
kick Treutlen started at midfield. The Vikings drove down to the JOCO
1 before the Trojan defense gave the ball to the Trojan offense at the JOCO
4. After an exchange of punts the Trojans were starting from inside
the 10 again. This time at the 3. This time it was and exchange
of turnovers. One play after the Trojans threw an interception the
Vikings would fumble. Zack Walker scooped up the fumbled and returned
it to the Treutlen 39. On the eighth play of the drive D. J. Rozier
ran in from 9 yards out. Deon Cuyler ran in the conversion and the
Trojans had a 22-6 lead with just over 8 minutes remaining. The
Vikings were not finished, however. Treutlen went 66 yards in just
over two minutes to make the score 22-14 after the conversion. A
Daniel Wright interception with about 10 seconds remaining would seal the
deal for JOCO.
The Trojans defense held Viking
running back Cartell McClendon to 91 yards on 23 carries. McClendon
scored both of Treutlen's touchdowns. D. J. Rozier played his usual
solid game and Zack Walker made another great catch to lead the Trojans
offense. The Trojans get a much needed week off this week before
hosting the region playoff game against an unknown opponent. |
