JOCO 30 HOWARD 15 |

The JOCO Trojans
defeated the Howard Huskies 30-15 in the season opener. The story of
the game was the defensive turnaround at the half. After surrendering
two quick touchdowns and 216 yards of offense in the first half the Trojans
"D" pitched a shutout the rest of the way and only allowed the Huskies 38
yards in the second half. The Trojans
took the opening kickoff and put together a 14 play, 77 yard drive to take a
6-0 lead. D. J. Rozier went the final five yards for the score.
The Huskies responded in only two plays with Aarion Palmer going 49 yards
for the touchdown. A two-point conversion gave Howard an 8-6 lead.
The Trojans came right back...in only four plays JOCO went 80 yards to
regain the lead. The big play was a 56 yard catch and run from Larry
Taylor. Freshman Bull Darrisaw got his first career touchdown from 10
yards out to put JOCO up 12-8. The first quarter scoring was not over,
however. With 19.4 seconds on the clock Howard quarterback Javoris
Kelly ran 23 yards for a touchdown. After the kick Howard led 15-12.
Howard got the ball right back after a Trojan turnover but the Trojans
defense stiffened enough to force a 34 yard field goal which was missed.
After an exchange of punts JOCO took the ball on their own 17 with 2:30
remaining in the half. The biggest play on the drive was a 4th and 10
completion from D. J. Rozier to Zack Walker that got the ball down to the
four. Rozier completed a pass to Larry Taylor for the touchdown with
14.5 seconds remaining in the half. JOCO led 18-15.
The third quarter went scoreless as the Trojans
squandered a golden opportunity early in the stanza. A bad snap on a
Huskies punt attempt set the Trojans up at the Howard 27. With
quarterback D. J. Rozier sidelined for much of the drive with cramps the
Trojans were unable to score and turned the ball over on downs at the four.
The defense held and set up the next Trojans scoring drive. JOCO went
46 yards in 8 plays with Zack Walker catching a D. J. Rozier pass from 2
yards out for the touchdown. JOCO led 24-15 with 10:06 remaining.
After holding Howard on downs JOCO started their final scoring drive.
With 2:35 on the clock D. J. Rozier hit Shamarko Brown from 27 yards out for
the score. JOCO led 30-15. After holding the Huskies on down the
Trojans ran out the clock. |
