SCD 29 JOCO 26

The Johnson County Trojans season came to an end on Friday night with a 29-26 loss to Savannah Country Day.  The Trojans outgained the Hornets (437-270), got more 1st downs (23-13) and controlled the time of possession (29:34-18:26) but lost on the scoreboard.

The Trojans took the opening kickoff and drove 75 yards in 12 plays to take an early 6-0 lead.  D. J. Rozier did most of the damage on the drive, racking up 62 yards on 8 carries.  However, after a failed onside kick the Hornets took the lead in less than two minutes.  The big play was a 26 yard run by Morris Watson.  Watson was stopped behind the line of scrimmage but with a little help from his offensive lineman managed to break free for the run down to the Trojan eight.  Kevin Blackburne took it in from there.  After the extra point the score was SCD 7-6.  JOCO came right back, though, scoring just before the end of the quarter.  This time JOCO went 69 yards in 10 plays.  D. J. once again carried the majority of the load with 5 carries for 38 yards.  This gave him an even 100 yards rushing in the first quarter.  The Trojans defense stopped the Hornets on their next possession and then the two teams exchange fumbles in JOCO territory.  JOCO came out of it with the ball at the 11 and 6:49 on the clock.  The Trojans marched down to the SCD 40 in pretty easy fashion but stalled after a holding penalty put them in a hole.  It was the third Trojan penalty on the drive.  The Trojans punt was blocked but Zack Walker made a great interception on the second play from scrimmage to get the ball back for JOCO.  The Trojan drive also ended in an interception.  SCD started at the JOCO 25 with 1:00 on the clock.  They went the distance in 43 seconds aided by a pass interference penalty.  After the two point conversion the score was SCD 15 JOCO 12.

Savannah Country Day took the second half kickoff and marched 60 yards down the field for a touchdown.  The extra point gave the Hornets a 10 point lead with just over 7 minutes remaining in the third quarter.  JOCO answered that score with a touchdown of their own.  Larry Taylor went the final four yards for the score.  The two point conversion attempt failed and the score was SCD 22 JOCO 18.  After a good kickoff by Alex Allen and a couple of penalties the Hornets had their backs up against their own goalline.  A high snap sailed out of the end zone and JOCO was within two at 22-20.  After the kick JOCO took the ball 68 yards, all on the ground, to regain the lead.  Larry Taylor scored from 3 yards out.  The two point conversion failed and JOCO led 26-22 with 9:10 remaining in the game.  The lead would not last long.  It looked like the Trojans were going to get the ball back and with the way they were running the ball could probably ice the game.  However, on 3rd down and 16 from their own 32 quarterback Cord Glaize hit Josh Murphy over the middle and he rambled for a 68 yard touchdown.  After the kick SCD led 29-26 with 7:33 remaining.  The Trojans would get two chances to win.  On the first one the Trojans would immediately be placed in a hole.  A good run by Taurus Mosley was called back for a block in the back and a pass completion was nullified by an illegal man downfield.  Backed up to their own 10 the Trojans were forced to throw.  Good defense by the Hornets forced a Trojan punt.  The Trojan defense got the ball back for JOCO at the 16 with 2:20 left.  After gaining one first down the Trojans threw a 4th down interception.  SCD ran out the remaingin 1:06 on the clock for the victory.
