JOCO 28
TREUTLEN 22 (OT) |
|
The Johnson County Trojans
overcame a 15-0 first half deficit and an eight point deficit with just over
seven minutes remaining in regulation to defeat the Treutlen Vikings.
With the win, Johnson County (8-1) clinched the #2 spot in the sub-region
and will host a region playoff game on November 6th. The Trojans are
off this week.
The Trojans took the opening
kickoff and, after picking up a couple of first downs, were forced to punt.
Treutlen took over at their own 11 and marched down the field. It took
only seven plays to score. Cartell McClendon's 52 yard run accounted
for most of the yardage. The Vikings got the ball right back after a
successful onside kick. This time Treutlen drove the 49 yards in 12
plays. McClendon went in from one yard out on 4th down for the
touchdown. Devonte Pierce ran in the two point conversion and Treutlen
led 15-0. The JOCO offense got the ball for the first time in almost
11 minutes. Starting at their 41 the Trojans marched down the field in
10 plays to narrow the gap. After getting a 13 yard run down to the 1,
D. J. Rozier went in for the touchdown. Rozier hit Zack Walker wide
open in the end zone for the conversion and the score was Treutlen 15
JOCO 8. The half ended with the same score.
After the Vikings received the
second half kickoff the JOCO defense held them to a three and out. The
Trojans started their opening drive of the half at their 17. JOCO went
that distance in 11 plays for a touchdown. Zack Walker caught three
passes on the drive for 44 yards. Rozier scored the touchdown from
four yards out to trim the lead to 15-14. Rozier's pass to Walker in
the corner of the end zone was just out of reach and Treutlen still led by
one with 3:37 left in the 3rd quarter. It was beginning to look like
Treutlen was going to answer but D. J. Rozier intercepted a Viking pass on
the 14. Two plays later, however, the Trojans fumbled the ball back to
the Vikings. Treutlen capitalized on the turnover. They went 33
yards in 5 plays to score. Carter McClendon got his second one yard
4th down touchdown run. The extra point was good and Treutlen led
22-14 with 7:29 remaining. The Trojans started their game tying drive
at their 39. The biggest play of the drive was a 4th down conversion
from the Treutlen 45. Rozier hit Shamarko Brown across the middle for
a 22 yard gain. Two plays later it appeared that the Trojans had
scored. Zack Walker made a great leaping catch at the one and
stretched the ball out across the goal line. However, the Trojans were
called for an illegal shift. Undeterred, the Trojans drove down to the
four where D. J. Rozier scored the touchdown. Down two with under
three minutes to go, JOCO had to have the conversion. D. J. Rozier
avoided a couple of would be tacklers and found Zack Walker in the end zone.
The shoestring grab tied the score at 22 with 2:52 remaining. The JOCO
defense stood up to the challenge and stopped Treutlen on their final
possession of the half. Jake Scott made a great open field tackle on a
3rd and 10 pass to force a Viking punt. On the Trojans first play from
scrimmage Rozier hit Walker across the middle for a 36 yard gain down to the
Treutlen 31. However, the Trojans could get no closer than the 19
before regulation ended.
Johnson County has not played an
overtime since the new rule was instituted. It is very similar to the
college rule but each team gets the ball at the 15. Treutlen got the
ball first. On 4th and 4 from the 9 it appear that Treutlen had an
open receiver but Jake Scott batted the ball down. The Trojans now had
their chance. On the second play D. J. Rozier ran down to the one yard
line. After a penalty against the Trojans Rozier ran the ball two more
times. The second run was the game winner...a one yard touchdown.
