WILKINSON COUNTY |
|
FRIDAY AUGUST 27TH |
|
KICKOFF - 7:30 |
|
The Johnson County Trojans will kick off the season
on Friday August 27th in Wilkinson County. JOCO is coming off an 8-2
season which had a very disappointing ending. JOCO returns six
starters on an offense that averaged 34 points per game. Leading the
charge are all-state candidates, D. J. Rozier and Zack Walker. D. J.
passed for 1,753 yards while rushing for another 919 yards. He passes
for 19 touchdowns and rushed for 17. Zack was among the state leaders
with 72 receptions for 1,172 yards and 14 touchdowns. Zack was a
pre-season All-State selection by the GHSFD. The offense also returns
Bull Darrisaw, who rushed for 320 yards in his freshmen season, and Shamarko
Brown, who caught 19 passes for 309 yards. The Trojans defense looks
to improve on last season with seven new starters. Linebackers Kelvion
Johnson and Tony Solen are the Trojans top two returners in tackles. Alex
Allen returns to do the kicking. The
Wilkinson County Warriors are coming off an 8-3 season. Just two years
ago Wilkinson County advanced to the state semifinals where they lost to E.
C. I. The Macon Telegraph has Wilkinson County listed as a team to
watch. The Warriors return 5'5 speedster Immanuel Shinholster at
runningback, college prospect Alvin Dupree at tight end/defensive line and
Patrick Reynolds at linebacker. |

JOCO/METTER
SCRIMMAGE |
|
After a change of day and location Johnson County
and Metter finally played their scrimmage game. The varsity played the
first three quarters with the JV playing the fourth quarter. The
Trojans "won" the varsity portion 27-7. D. J. Rozier and Bull Darrisaw
each scored on long runs and Alex Allen made three of four extra points to
provide the scoring for JOCO. Metter got their only score after an
interception set them up at about the 15 yard line. Elijah Thomas
provided the only score in the JV portion with a 10 yard run. The
final score was 33-7. JOCO will travel to Irwinton on Friday to play
the Wilkinson County Warriors.
Kickoff is at 7:30.
REMINDER - Save you ticket stub from the scrimmage in
Wrightsville...they will be honored at the September 3rd JOCO/East Laurens game.
The Johnson County School System is sorry for any inconvenience. |

REGION
PREVIEWS |
|
REGION 1-A |
|
Eight teams will vie for the region championship in
the 2010 version of Region 1-A. Based on last year's performance it
looks like it'll come down to the winner of the Miller County (9-3) and
Seminole County (8-3) game. The two bitter rivals will play at
Seminole County on October 29th. Another interesting team to watch is
Mitchell County (3-7). They are dropping down from Class AA and have
the fastest football player in the state on their team. Justin
Scott-Wesley has committed to play wide receiver for the University of
Georgia in 2011. Pelham (5-6) ended a long string of futility last
season by winning five of their last six regular season games and making the
playoffs for the first time since 2003. Terrell County (6-4) will also
be in the hunt for a playoff spot. The other teams in the region are
Randolph-Clay (2-8), Calhoun County (1-9) and Stewart County (0-9). |
|
REGION 2-A |
|
I don't think there's any doubt that Region 2-A is
the toughest region in the state this year. Wilcox County (13-2) won
the State Championship last season and has one of the state's most dynamic
players in quarterback Nick Marshall but is probably not the favorite to win
the region. That honor probably goes to Charlton County (11-1-1).
A perennial challenger for the Class AA Championship the Indians have
dropped down to Class A. Charlton County head coach Rich McWhorter has
compiled a record of 218-45-2 in 20 seasons. They have won at least 10
games in 16 of those 20 seasons. Charlton County also has one of the
state's top players in Chris Milton. If that isn't enough Clinch County (10-4) also
calls this region home. Between these three schools they have
collected nine state championships in the last 22 years. Clinch
County gets both Wilcox and Charlton at home, while Charlton must travel to
both. The other six teams will battle for the last playoff spot.
Irwin County (5-6) is the only one of the six to make the state playoffs
last season. The other five are Lanier County (3-6), Telfair County
(3-7), Bacon County (2-8), Atkinson County (1-8) and Turner County (1-9). |
|
REGION 3-A |
|
Region 3 remains the same except Portal and Metter
swapped sub-regions. E. C. I. (10-2) once again has to be the favorite
to win the West side. They are 49-4 in the last four years. Like
last year Johnson County (8-2) and Treutlen (8-3) will be the top
contenders. Jenkins County (4-6) and Montgomery County (4-6) would
love to move up the sub-region ladder. Wheeler County (1-9) and Portal
(1-9) both have new head coaches to lead them. Over in the East
sub-region Savannah Christian, coming off a loss in the championship game,
is the favorite once again. In his five season as the head man Donald Chumley has turned Savannah Christian into a powerhouse. They are
49-12 in that time. Claxton (6-4), Savannah Country Day (5-6) and
Calvary Day (4-6) should contend. The other two teams, Metter (3-7)
and Bryan County (1-9) both have new head coaches to lead them.
|
|
REGION 4-A |
|
The new Region 4-A consists of 11 teams and, much to
the chagrin of the fine folks in Hawkinsville, they will play an all-region
schedule. Greenville (11-1) is coming off their best season since
1992. Chattahoochee County (9-2) finished second in the region last
year. Chattahoochee has only been playing football for four years.
Brookstone (8-3) finished third last season and is always a factor in the
region race. Three newcomers will have a say in how Region 4 shapes
up...Hawkinsville (6-5), Dooly County (5-5) and Macon County (2-8).
Hawkinsville seems to be working their way back to the top. They made
the playoffs last season after missing out the two years before. Dooly
County always has great athletes but this year they have a new coach, Jimmy
Hughes. Hughes had a 6-24 record at Monticello the last three years.
Macon County is coming off their worst season since 1988 but the drop down
from Class AA should help them. Other teams that could have a say
before it's all over are Marion County (7-4), Taylor (6-4), Schley County
(3-6), Pacelli (2-8) and Central-Talbotton (1-8). |
|
REGION 5-A |
|
Region 5 consists of 14 private schools split into
two regions...four of these schools are newcomers to the GHSA. The
North sub-region will probably come down to Wesleyan (12-1) and Holy
Innocents'(11-2). Wesleyan moves to Region 5 from Region 8. The
Wolves won the state championship in 2008. Their team is anchored by
center David Andrews. One of the top players in the state Andrews is
headed to Georgia in 2011. Holy Innocents' was a surprise team in
2009, advanced to the quarterfinals in only their fourth year. They
meet at Wesleyan on September 17th. After these two GHSA newcomer
Pinecrest (11-2) will challenge Mt. Pisgah (5-5), Pace Academy (3-7),
Fellowship Christian (2-8) and King's Ridge. Eagle's Landing Christian (9-3) is
probably the favorite in the South. Eagle's Landing has not had a
losing season since joining the GHSA in 2004. Landmark Christian (6-5)
will contend as always. They have not missed the playoffs since 1999.
Whitefield Academy (6-5) should challenge for a spot in the playoffs as they
have the last seven years. F.
P. D. (9-3) has a strong tradition in the GISA and could surprise. Our
Lady of Mercy (2-8), Southwest Atlanta Christian (2-8) and newcomer Strong
Rock Christian (4-7) will also battle in the South sub-region. |
|
REGION 6-A |
|
Region 6-A is the same as last season except for the
addition of Mt. Paran Christian. It looks like the four playoff spots
will once again belong to Bowdon (10-2), Darlington (9-5), Bremen (7-5) and
Trion (6-5) but the order could change. Bowdon seems to be returning
to prominence. They are led by Coach Dwight Hochstetler. He has
a career record of 305-97-1. The 305 wins are eighth all-time and
fourth among active coaches. Darlington was a surprise
semi-finalist last season after finishing the regular season 6-4.
Bremen is looking to bounce back from their worst season since 2002.
Trion had their first winning season last season after four consecutive
losing seasons. Walker (3-7), Mt. Zion (2-8), Gordon Lee (1-9) and Mt.
Paran Christian (8-2) are hoping one of the top four will falter. |
|
REGION 7-A |
|
Among the seven teams vying for the Region 7
championship Lincoln County (11-2) has to, once again, be the favorite.
Larry Campbell keeps churning out championship teams. In 39 season
Campbell and the Red Devils have compiled a record of 437-75-3 for an
amazing .851 winning percentage. He ranks #1 all-time among Georgia
coaches and #3 in the nation. Along with Lincoln County you have two
teams that have been successful as of late...Twiggs County (11-2) and
Wilkinson County (8-3). Dexter Dawson takes over the reins of the
Twiggs County football program from Dexter Copeland. Copeland was
highly successful as Twiggs. The Cobras were 73-32 in his 9 seasons at
the helm. This is Dawson's first year as a head coach. James
Hagins enters his 15th season leading the Wilkinson County Warriors.
They have been up and down during his tenure but he has managed to have a
very respectable 82-69-2 record. Washington-Wilkes (5-6), Aquinas
(5-5) and Warren County (4-7) will battle for a playoff spot as well. |
|
REGION 8-A |
|
Region 8-A loses Wesleyan to Region 5-A and picks up
Riverside Military (5-6) and George Walton (11-3). Riverside Military
dropped down from AA this year. George Walton comes to the GHSA from
the GISA where they were a perennial power. Last season Georgia Walton
won the GISA AAA State Championship. Holdovers Commerce (7-5) and
Athens Academy (7-4) should be the favorites to win the region. Both
schools have excellent traditions and excellent coaches. Steve Savage
has been at Commerce since 1989 and has compiled a 176-79 record in his time
there. Michael Gunn has been at Athens Academy since 1991 and has
compiled a 160-61-1 record. Athens Academy will host Commerce on
October 15th. Social Circle (4-7), Athens Christian (5-5) and Prince
Avenue Christian (3-7) will battle with these teams for a spot in the
playoffs. |
